If you could have only seen my face in that moment, I was so happy I couldn’t help but cry. Over the next couple days, we talked about what all we’d have to change in order to move closer to some of the important people in our lives sooner than planned. The house projects I’d intended to tackle this year, our budget, vacations, all of it had to be reevaluated. You may be thinking, “but Julia, why is moving the solution? Can’t you start building a community where you are right now?” Yes, we can. But if our goal is to build a life somewhere with our existing friends and family, Alex and I want to make decisions with that more front of mind and do what we can to reach that place faster. There’s no sense in waiting to live our lives but if you know you want to go then you’ve got to do what you can to get there as soon as it makes sense to. I moved to Lansing right out of college and, I’ll admit, I never really tried to cultivate friendships or build a support system here because I didn’t think we’d be here that long. The last thing I wanted to do was make a bunch of close friends and build a life that I would have an awful time leaving when we moved East! But as the years went by and 2 went to 3, 3 turned to 4, and even when we bought this house, I never changed my approach to living. I continued to not seek out friendships or build a support system here beyond Alex. After 6 years, I took a look around and realized over that time I’d slowly looked to Alex and even DIY to fill a void that used to be occupied by like 20 extremely important people in my life. We’re actively working to be able to move next summer. What that means for projects is we’ve scrapped our summer plans to overhaul the deck and backyard and instead are getting this house in shape to sell. First project on that list starts tomorrow and it’s one you’ll be familiar with! It’s finishing the tile in the guest bathroom that I left covered in thin set for the last three or so months… So, we WANT to start the moving process in a year. Alex is from there and virtually all his family and friends still live in that direction. At the time, two of my siblings as well as much of my extended family lived on the East side, My parents even planned to sell their home in West Michigan when they retired and move East. Living in between and near our jobs seemed like the best plan for the next several years while we waited to see where everyone landed. Two years in and a lot has changed. Over that time friends and family have gotten married, some have had babies, others have left, and some have moved to West Michigan. I also started DIYing during the week to fill my free time and furniture flipping to help fund my projects. Alex and I were progressing in each of our careers and from the outside we looked like we were doing really well! But you never know how a color will look entirely until you have it up on the wall. There are too many factors that can influence the look of a given color: Natural light Artificial light How the light changes throughout the day The direction(s) your windows (if any) face Other colors you have going on in the space My mom always told me, when you’re painting a large area like a wall verses a piece of furniture, pick the color you like and then buy it two shades lighter. This is because most colors look a little bolder and darker when they cover such a large surface. This is a great trick and I use it virtually every time we pick a wall color. HOWEVER, with how much painting I‘ve done at this point I feel like I’ve really honed in my sense of color. As soon as I painted the one shade lighter (#4) I was like, “OH, I love this one even more!” After painting all the swatches, still, I was in love with those two colors the most. In the end…… we haven’t chosen yet Alex is leaning towards #3 and I am leaning more towards #4 so we painted a few larger swatches of the two around the room to better help us make the right call. I bought a plastic set for underwear and socks, but I needed more for things like tee shirts, pj’s, sweaters with wide necklines; things that didn’t make sense to hang. The cubbies were nice, but they quickly became unorganized and have since turned into a place where I set random stuff. Overall, there’s just a lot of head space and the area that has the depth for pull-out drawers (the 48” between the doors) isn’t being utilized effectively. Most of this project was spent sifting through papers, putting things where they actually go around the house, tossing out everything expired… and sorting the remaining into logical piles to be put back into the cabinet. They house anything that couldn’t stand up on its own or simply added clutter. I bought a small and large set and chose clear so we could always find what we were looking for easily. Since we’re always adding things to this cabinet, and likely will need another drawer or two in the future, I added some labels for additional ease using my favorite label maker. This baby is super cheap and makes the cutest stamped labels! I know sound crazy but all you type-A’s out there get the hype of a good label maker… Lastly, I added a calendar and basket for our writing utensils to the door. This enabled me to utilize previously dead space and freed up more room in the cabinet. I just hate the look of it. At one point I was going to staple bed sheets to the exposed joists but I thought that would look terrible. Then I considered securing black foam core to them, even installing drywall, but the issue I kept running into was the resulting ceiling height. I use a rebounder to workout so I need all the height I can get for bouncing. So, I’ve decided I’m going to paint it all. I painted our guest bathroom faucet last March and it’s held up phenomenally- it looks like I painted it yesterday. Plus, I saved $$$ not buying new hardware! His Great Aunt Cora left it, along with all her other dining room furniture, to my grandparents when she died in the late 1950’s. My Grandpa said she made the best chess pie. She was a school teacher in Atlanta, GA in the Morningside area near where my sister lives now. Her old school teacher bell sits on one of the many shelves in the den of my parents’ home. My Grandpa really liked Aunt Cora; she was good to him (better than his mom in his eyes). Growing up, this cabinet was always in the corner of my grandparents' dinning room to the right of my Grandpa’s chair at the dinner table. We ate every meal all together in that dining room, at that table, in their home in Acworth, GA during our visits. The only exceptions being lunch’s on one of Grandpa’s old boats, one he had just finished building, or on a picnic table along the water at the Yacht Club where my grandparents kept them. Yacht Club makes it sound fancy but there wasn’t a single yacht on Lake Allatoona. It was old, campy, and I miss every bit of it. While he obviously didn’t build this cabinet, my Grandpa is the person that comes to mind most when I look at it. He was a DIYer he whole life in addition to the other jobs he had. He build many boats and taught my dad many things. And many of those things my dad, in turn, taught me. I love having a piece that reminds me of my Grandpa here, in my own home. And as much as I present myself as someone who doesn’t give a fuck about what other people think, I often second guess myself during my design process and wonder whether people will like what I come up with in the end. At the beginning of this flip, I found myself spending hours drawing up different color blocking and paint design concepts I started to resent my process. Late one night after sketching another option it just hit me that I was wasting my time. I knew I wasn’t going to paint any of these options because I didn’t like them to begin with. I had wanted to paint this desk this way from the moment I saw it on Marketplace and I was just trying to make sure I could justify it to the masses. But why? It’s MY desk!
